Amplitude modulation is method of transmitting analog signals, usually voice (intelligence) frequency on a high frequency carrier wave. Changing the modulation index varies the amplitude modulation. In this trainer has all the means to achieve this. This trainer consists of both transmitter and receiver. While the carrier wave is internally generated, the voice signal or output of sine generator is usually used as input signals for transmission purposes. This trainer has suitable microphone input, and signal conditioner. At the output it has an audio power amplifier and speaker to receive the demodulated signals. An optional 1 KHz function generator with 1 V PP amplitude, and a dual beam oscilloscope is immensely useful to view the waveforms at different stages of modulation and demodulation.

Antenna System Laboratory is a very useful acquisition for any modern Electronics & Communications Laboratory. It can be used to practically demonstrate the basic principles of EM Theory.

Introduction:

What is an Antenna?
An antenna is a wire or a group of wires. It converts RF signals, generated by the transmitter, into electromagnetic waves for propagation through space. The receiving antenna receives these EM waves and reconverts them back into the original RF signals for further processing.
The antennas act like interfacing devices between a transmitter and space, and also between space and a receiver.
Thus, both transmitting and receiving antennas have entirely different functions to perform. But they also behave identically (i, e), their behavior is reciprocal.
Any communication system is as good as the antenna it uses. It is completely self-contained for conducting all experiments.
Using ASL-1, the student can understand the basic principles of polarization, directivity, gain and impedance of various types of antennas, in a laboratory environment. In reality, an antenna is a very complex device, with distributed components like inductance, capacitance and resistance spreading all over its length and breath.
They also vary continuously all over its surface and their spread determines the polarization, gain and radiation pattern etc., of an antenna.
Thus, an antenna is an LCR network.
The student can verify them in the laboratory.
Each antenna has its own special features and applications. There is no one best antenna design for all purposes.
Only about 70 types of antenna seem to have been developed so far in the world. Today, 90% of all antennas are vertical, 5% horizontal and 5% other types.

Objectives of Experiments:

Description:
Antenna System Laboratory consists of thirty varieties of antennas fabricated in several shapes and sizes, depending upon the operating frequencies and applications.

Compact Disc (CD):
Compact disc is supplied to understand the details of all thirty antennae. This is simulation software. This is optional requirement. A compact disc (CD), to understand details of all thirty antennas.

Description of the system:
The following antennas are supplied with the ASL-1. Using these antennas, it is possible to study the behavior of each of them for a given transmission and reception medium. The antenna is mounted on a revolving stand. This stand can be manually revolved on a horizontal axis in 3600 with reference to ground plane. It is possible to record and observe the response on a field strength meter (FSM). Using these readings it is possible to draw the POLAR diagram for various angular positions of antenna. Each antenna is a dynamic demonstrator by itself.

VHF Transmitter: This is a hand-held, variable frequency (135MHz to 175MHz) with 1.5 Watts of VHF output. It can be used both in the field and laboratory environments. It uses a re-chargeable battery. Any "LOW" battery status is indicated, for recharging.
This PLL synthesized digital transmitter has a 4-digit frequency counter, with a 100 KHz resolution.
Its frequency can be varied by both SLOW/FAST controls. It can be modulated externally using a condenser microphone.

Tuned VHF Field Strength meter: This measures RF level of each received signal in mV, (between 1dB to 100dB) in steps of 1dB. This is also battery operated. Convenient for field/laboratory uses.

Tripod: This is used to mount transmitter antenna. This is fixed on a stand, whose height can be varied upto 2 Meters.

Software: This is an optional requirement. Using this simulated software, it is possible to plot radiation patterns on the computer.

What can a student learn? Using this trainer: The following are the objectives. After performing the following listed experiments the student learns
a. The evolution of antenna
b. Understand the current and voltage distributions along its entire length of transmission line and find its characteristic impedance.
c. Measure voltage and current distributions along the length and breadth of antenna.
d. Prepare a perfect earthing system, (an earth mat) or a simulated ground.
e. Understand types of polarization (vertical, horizontal and circular)
f. Understanding the field strength, radiation pattern, power gain and impedance of antennas.
g. Design a half wave dipole for a given frequency.
h. Understand the effect of perfect ground as a reflector.
i. Understand the principle of reciprocity.
j. Understand the principle of directional antennas, for navigational purposes.
k. Understand the effect of reflector and each director in a Yagi Antenna, in terms of gain and radiation pattern.
l. Determine the right type of BALUN.
m. Design at least ten types of antennas and construct them.

The main purpose of a radio receiver is to intercept and decode the radio waves. All radio receivers MUST contain at least these,

1.Antenna system,
2.Tuned circuit,
3.Detector
4.Transducer

When the sound signal is mixed with the carrier frequency then the frequency of the carrier wave remains the same but the amplitude of the carrier changes with the amplitude of the signal. In this case when the amplitude of the carrier waves changes with the amplitude of the sound signals, then the modulation is said to be the Amplitude Modulation or AM.

This type of amplitude modulation is characterized by a lot of disturbance and noise. Consequently, the quality and clarity of the transmitted sound is not quite good. When these AM signal is received on the radio receivers then the quality of the sound reproduced also remains poor.

The main objective of the Super heterodyne receiver is to produce an intermediate frequency (IF) by the process of heterodyne or beating. This can be accomplished when two frequencies are mixed to produce the beat frequency .In superhets, the IF is usually 455 kHz which is selected because the broadcast band begins above that frequency. So if we imagine a situation when the RF amplifier is tuned to receive a 800KHz broadcast signal the local oscillator must be tuned to 1255 kHz which will result in an IF of 455KHz(1255-800 kHz). Since we have to tune the RF amplifier section throughout the entire broadcast band, the frequency of the local oscillator must also vary in a manner that it always maintains a gap of 455kHz. To achieve this condition, the local oscillator and the RF amplifier section are "ganged", i.e., their tuning condensers are connected /ganged mechanically in such a way that when we tune the variable capacitor in the RF section, the variable capacitor in the local oscillator also changes its value it ´tracks´ the frequency to which the ´aerial circuit´ is tuned and remain separated from the tuned frequency by 455kHz up. The intermediate frequency (IF), which is considerably low frequency is being used, because it is a suitable

The demonstrator has several test points for observations. Using these test points, waveforms of incoming signals can be observed using a high frequency oscilloscope.

The Automatic Telephone Exchange Demonstrator is state of art Microprocessor Technology. It has user friendly commands and is simple to operate. Each function is programmable through the telephone several built-in functions and readily usable. These arithmetic logic units (ALU)/function generators perform 16 binary arithmetic operations on two 4-bit words. These operations are selected by the four function-select lines (S0, S1, S2, and S3) and include addition, subtraction, decrement and straight transfer. When performing arithmetic manipulations, applying a low-level voltage to the mode control input (M) must enable the internal carries. A full carry look-ahead scheme is available in these devices for fast, simultaneous carry generation by means of two cascade-outputs (P and G) for the four bits in the package. Using this demonstrator it is possible to perform and verify the following functions

  • Two arithmetic operations: Addition and Subtraction of 4-bit binary words.
  • Five logic operations: AND, NAND, OR, NOR, AND exclusive - OR.

In order to accomplish the above tasks, required address selector switches, DATA selector switches, push switches, LED indicators for ADDRESS and DATA are provided in the equipment itself. This trainer comes with necessary power supplies.

In this trainer two independent solid state relay modules. Are used for connecting AC loads. This relay consists of two TRIACS. The first TRIAC gets a control signal from a digital circuit. There is an opto-isolator between the control circuit and the first TRIAC. Depending on the status of the control signal, the first TRIAC is either activated or not. When activation signal is received by the first TRIAC, it sends gate pulse to second TRIAC. Thus enabling AC load to be activated. The solid state relay used in this trainer comes in the form of a packed module consisting of opto-isolator and TRAIC devices.

This module can at best be used in conjunction with a dedicated hardware or a Microprocessor or a Microcontroller or any other data acquisition system at the time of prototype development or just for experiment. Input signal level: TTL (0 to 5v DC). Output : 230V AC @ 3A.

AC regulator works on the principle of converting fixed AC voltage to a variable AC voltage operating at the same frequency. This principle is used in speed control of AC drives, pumps, illumination control, temperature control of ovens etc. The devices used for such a control are TRIACS, DIACS and THYRISTORS.

This trainer is intended to provide facility to change the phase angle ? of TRIAC GATE with reference to power line frequency. As a result of this the ON / OFF state of TRIAC is varied, thereby varying RMS value is changed. In this trainer it is possible to measure the phase difference between the input and the output signal. This trainer contains a TRIAC, DIAC necessary firing circuit, and power supply. Load circuit waveforms can be observed through the test points provided. You can connect the load like fan, lamp, pumps, etc. not exceeding max 1A at the load terminal. An isolated 12 AC reference supply is available, for comparing the phase difference at various points on the circuit board, using an external dual beam oscilloscope. In order to connect external loads like fan, lamp, pumps, etc, a separate power socket is available as part of TRIAC circuit. Using this AC loads upto 1 A can be connected. It is very important to note that, HIGH VOLTAGES EXIST on the circuit board, so sufficient and enough care must be taken while measuring the circuit under study.

The entire instrument is housed in an elegant FRP cabinet.
